Ankh

Posted by Christine L on 1st Jul 2015

The ankh is one of the most familiar of Egyptian hieroglyphs. The ankh is also known as breath of life, the key of the Nile or crux ansata. It may represent the life-giving elements of air and water. It resembles the Christian cross, with a loop above the transverse bar. Theories on its origins are numerous and varied. Originally, the ankh may have been a knot with some specific religious or mythical significance.

The popularity of the ankh is evident in the numerous and varied types of everyday objects which were shaped in the form of the ankh. The ankh was popular throughout Egyptian history and due to its cruciform shape remained so into the Coptic period. However, in modern day, the Ankh is usually taken for a Christian cross, as the crux ansata (Latin for "cross with a handle”).

This luxurious Ankh cross pendant, available in 10k or 14k gold, is diamond cut and finished with an impeccable polish. Show off your culture and faith with this Ankh pendant adorning your necklace or ring.
